Blessing My LineIsaiah 44:3

Poured Out on Your Offspring

This message is for the man whose family talks about the land and the ancestors and never about a blessing, who wants to be the first to say one out loud

His family has a beautiful vocabulary and it is all pointed backwards.

They can tell you where the family came from and what happened in the year of the storm. They can name four generations without hesitating and they will correct you, kindly, if you get one out of order. There are stories that are told the same way every time, with the same pauses, and everybody in that family knows where the pauses go.

It is a rich inheritance and he knows it and he is grateful for it and he would not trade it.

And there is not one sentence in the whole of it that is spoken over anybody going forward.

Not one. He checked, over about a year, quietly, at three family gatherings. Plenty about who they are and where they are from. Nothing said over a head. Nothing put on a child. Nothing that begins with the word may or the word you and points at somebody's future.

He is thirty-eight and there are children in that family now, including two of his own, and he has begun to feel a strange responsibility that he does not know what to do with.

Somebody has to be first. And in a family that talks that beautifully about the past, being the first to say something out loud about the future feels like standing up at a meal and speaking a language nobody in the room has heard.

Poured Out on Your Offspring

Water on dry ground, and where it lands

For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring (Isaiah 44:3).

Two halves and the second one is the reason this verse is in this article.

The first half is about a thirsty person: water on him, floods on dry ground. Fine, familiar, and it is about the one who is standing there.

And then the verse turns forward without stopping: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring.

The pouring does not stop at the man being addressed. It goes past him onto the ones after him, and the verb stays the same. Poured. Not dripped, not offered, not made available. Poured, which is a word about volume and about direction, and the direction is downhill, onto the next ones.

You are standing where something is being poured, and the verse says where it lands next. That is the plain movement of the sentence, and it is the Holy Spirit who is explicitly named as the thing being poured, which means the carrying of a blessing down a family is His work rather than a father's oratory.

A backwards vocabulary is a gift and it is half a language

Now let me be careful, because your family's memory is a genuine treasure and I am not going to be clever about it.

A family that can name four generations has something most families have lost. That is not nostalgia; it is a form of love that has been maintained by work, and it has held people steady in hard years, and it will hold your children steady too.

But a vocabulary pointed only backwards can describe where a person is from and has no words for where they are going. And children, in particular, need both: they need to know whose they are, and they need to hear somebody speak over them about what is ahead.

You have half a language. It is a good half. It is still half.

You are able to add the half that is missing and it does not cost you the half you have. The word says God has given us the ministry of blessing rather than of cursing, and Scripture is full of families where somebody spoke forward over the next ones, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gives a man the words in a moment where he has none.

Somebody has to be first

Here is the thing about being the first in a family to do anything, and I say it as a man who has watched it a few times.

The first one always feels like a fool. There is no exception to this. When there is no existing form for a thing, the person who introduces it is doing something visibly new in front of people who did not ask for it, and that is uncomfortable in a way that has nothing to do with whether it is right.

The discomfort is not a sign that you have misunderstood something. It is simply the cost of being first, and somebody in every family that has ever had a good habit paid it once.

You are permitted to be the first one, and the awkwardness is the price and not a verdict. Scripture says be strong and of a good courage, be not afraid, for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest (Joshua 1:9), which was said to a man about to do something nobody in front of him had done, and the Holy Spirit is the one who steadies a person in a moment like that.

And I will keep it plain, because we do not oversell here. Saying it does not decide what your children do with it, and it may be years before anybody in that family says anything similar. What is settled is that the pouring in that verse has a direction, and a man can stand in it and speak forward for the first time in four generations.

The breakthrough

So today you say one sentence forward, out loud, over the ones who come after you, by name.

Outside, on the ground, because your family's language is a land language and this belongs in the open air rather than in a room.

Say the names. Then say the verse over them: God pours His spirit upon your seed and His blessing upon your offspring.

You are going to feel the newness of it. Let it be new. Every form that a family has was started by somebody who felt exactly like that once, and the fact that nobody has done it in four generations is not evidence that it should not be done; it is the reason it needs doing.

You are standing where a pouring has a direction, and the direction is onto the ones after you. The word says I will pour my spirit upon thy seed and my blessing upon thine offspring, and it is the Holy Spirit who is the thing being poured, so the carrying of this is not a matter of a man finding the right words.

Declare this over yourself

Now speak, standing out on the ground. You are in Christ, and Scripture calls those who are His a royal priesthood, so the standing to speak forward over the next generation was given to you and does not have to be granted by anybody in your family. The word is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is the one who lands it. What God does in those children is His to decide, and He may answer in ways and at times you will not see. What He has said about the direction of the pouring is written into the verse.

  1. Vocabulary that points backwards, you are a treasure and you are half a language. Scripture says I will pour my spirit upon thy seed and my blessing upon thine offspring, and that verse moves forward without stopping at the man being spoken to.
  2. Fear of being the first to speak forward, you are put down on this ground today. In the name of Jesus I say it out loud anyway, because the word says be strong and of a good courage, and that was said to a man about to do what nobody ahead of him had done.
  3. Father, You pour Your Spirit on my seed and Your blessing on my offspring, and I am saying their names out loud under an open sky. I thank You that by Your Spirit the carrying of this is Yours, and somebody in this family had to be first, and today it is me.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
