Blessing My LinePsalm 103:17

To Children's Children

This message is for the grandfather who wants to hand something down and has only ever been handed silence at the table

Nothing was ever said at his father's table. Not one thing.

Not about God, not about love, not about what a man is for. There was food, and there was a radio, and there was the sound of cutlery, and there were sentences about the day. It was not a cold house. His father was affectionate in the way men of that generation were affectionate, which is to say through work and through presence and through a hand briefly on the back of a head on the way past.

But nothing was ever said, and so nothing was ever handed.

He is sixty-eight now and there are four grandchildren, and the eldest is nine and sits next to him and asks the sort of question a nine-year-old asks.

And he wants, more than he has wanted most things in his life, to hand something down at his own table.

And he opens his mouth and the same silence is in it.

Because a man cannot pass on a form he was never given, and every time he tries to imagine himself saying something about God out loud, at a table, with his son and his daughter-in-law sitting there, the whole thing feels like a costume.

So he passes the bread, and he is warm, and he is present, and he does the hand on the back of the head, which he learned from his father and which is genuinely a good thing.

And nothing is said. Again. For a second generation.

To Children's Children

A mercy with a range on it

But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children's children (Psalm 103:17).

Look at the range in that verse and notice it is stated twice, in two different directions.

From everlasting to everlasting. That is time, extended in both directions past anything a person can see.

And his righteousness unto children's children. That is a family, extended forward past the person hearing it. Not children. Children's children, which means the reach is explicitly stated as going further than the next step.

A man at a table with a nine-year-old on one side is exactly the person that second phrase is aimed at.

You are inside a mercy whose stated range goes past the people you can see. That is what the psalm says about how far it runs, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries a thing down a family, because Scripture says it is not by might nor by power but by His Spirit, which is precisely why a man's inability to find words is not the limiting factor.

Silence is not neutral, and it is not a sin either

Now let me say something careful about your father, because you love him and you should.

The silence at that table was not cruelty. It was inheritance. He was handed it too, by a man who was handed it, and none of them decided anything. A family passes on its forms without discussing them, and a form of not-speaking transmits exactly as reliably as a form of speaking.

So there is no villain in this article and I am not going to invent one.

But silence is not neutral in its effect, however innocent it is in its origin. A child at a table where nothing is said learns that nothing is to be said, and learns it thoroughly, and carries it to his own table forty years later and finds it in his own mouth.

You are not obliged to hand on what was handed to you. The word says you were redeemed from your vain manner of life received by tradition from your fathers (1 Peter 1:18), and that verse is specifically about inherited patterns rather than about personal wrongdoing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who breaks a form without requiring anybody to be blamed for it.

One sentence is a form

Here is the practical thing, and it is smaller than what you have been imagining.

You have been picturing a speech. Something at the head of a table, with everybody quiet, delivered by a man who is qualified to deliver it. And you have correctly concluded that you cannot do that and that it would feel like a costume.

You do not need a speech. You need one sentence, said out loud, in an ordinary voice, with the food going round and nobody being asked to stop talking.

One sentence about God. Something He has actually done, or something He is. Said once, and then you pass the bread.

That is a form. A nine-year-old absorbs a form from about the fourth repetition without anybody explaining anything, which is exactly how you absorbed the silence.

You are able to start a form at your own table tonight and it fits in one sentence. Scripture says the fruit of our lips is giving thanks to His name (Hebrews 13:15), which locates the whole thing in a mouth rather than in a personality, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the work while a grandfather says something quite short.

And I will be honest, because you would want it. Saying one sentence does not decide what any of those four grandchildren believe at thirty. Nothing here promises an outcome in another person. What is settled is that the mercy's stated range is children's children, and that a form can be started by one sentence at one meal by one man who was never given one.

The breakthrough

So tonight one sentence gets said at your table, and then you pass the bread.

Not a speech. Not an announcement. Not a change of atmosphere. One sentence, in the ordinary voice you use for everything else, with the plates moving and the nine-year-old talking over you, which he will, and which does not matter at all.

Say something God has done. Name it. Then move on and do not explain what you just did, and do not look round to see how it landed.

You will feel it as enormous. Everybody else will experience it as a sentence. That gap is normal and it means nothing about whether it worked.

You have a mouth and a table and a mercy whose range is children's children. The word states the reach and puts the thanksgiving in the lips, and it is the Holy Spirit who runs a form down a family, so a second generation of silence can end tonight in about six seconds.

Declare this over yourself

Now speak. You are in Christ, and Scripture calls those who are His a royal priesthood, so the standing to say something about God at your own table was given to you and is not the property of anybody better qualified. The word is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is the one who lands it. What God does in your grandchildren over the years ahead is His to decide, and He may answer in ways you will not live to see. What He has said about the range of His mercy is written into the psalm.

  1. Silence handed to me at that table, you are inheritance and you are not obligation. Scripture says His righteousness runs to children's children, and a range like that was never going to be stopped by a man not knowing what to say.
  2. Fear that it will feel like a costume, you are put down at this table tonight. In the name of Jesus I say six seconds out loud, because the word says the fruit of our lips is giving thanks to His name, and that puts it in a mouth and not in a personality.
  3. Father, Your mercy runs from everlasting to everlasting and Your righteousness to children's children. I thank You that by Your Spirit a form can start tonight with one sentence, and I am starting it, and then I am passing the bread.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
