The Generation of the Upright

She does the arithmetic when he is asleep and it always comes out the same.

He gets her hours. He gets a house where the heating goes on later than it should. He gets a mother who is good and tired and who missed the thing at school in March because it was on a Thursday and Thursday is the shift she cannot move.

He gets no father in the building. He gets the low grade constant awareness of money that she never wanted him to have and that he has anyway, because a ten-year-old is not stupid and he has stopped asking for things.

That is the list. She has been through it many times, at about half past eleven, and every time she gets to the end of it and thinks the same sentence.

Struggle is all I have to give him.

She is not self-pitying. She would be embarrassed by that description and she would be right to be. She is a competent, funny, extremely capable woman who is holding a whole household up with two hands and getting it mostly right.

She has just quietly concluded that what she is passing on is a set of hard conditions, and that whatever else she is, she is not in a position to hand anybody anything.

Read what the psalm says comes after

His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the upright shall be blessed (Psalm 112:2).

Now look at what that verse attaches the outcome to, because it is not what any of us would guess.

Not to a fortune. Not to a house. Not to two parents, or to a stable rota, or to an absence of hardship. To the generation of the upright, which is a description of a person's manner of life and not of their circumstances.

The psalm as a whole is about somebody who fears God, deals graciously, is not afraid of bad news, and gives to those who have less. Nowhere in it is that person described as comfortable.

And the promise about the next generation sits right at the top, in verse two, before anything else is said.

You are handing on the thing the psalm actually attaches the blessing to. That is what the verse says the mechanism is, and it is the Holy Spirit who runs that down a family, because Scripture says it is not by might nor by power but by His Spirit, and neither might nor power is a description of your Thursday.

What he is actually receiving

Let me put a second column beside your list, because your list is accurate and it is not the whole list.

He is receiving a woman who did not go under. He is watching, daily, at an age when watching is how everything is learned, a person carry something heavy without becoming cruel about it. He is learning what it looks like when somebody keeps a promise to a child while exhausted, which is the only situation in which keeping a promise actually teaches anything.

He is learning that his mother laughs, and that people who are tired can still be funny, and that a household can be short of money and not short of safety.

None of that is on your half past eleven list, because it is invisible from the inside and because it does not feel like an asset when you are doing it.

You are giving him things that are not on the list you keep counting. The word says the generation of the upright shall be blessed and gives a description of an upright person that is entirely about conduct rather than about resources, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a mother able to see what she is actually handing over.

Struggle is a condition, not an inheritance

Here is where I want to be very precise, because this matters and a sloppy version of it would be cruel.

Struggle is real and I am not going to spiritualize it. The heating, the shift, the thing in March. Those are hard and they are not secretly good and I am not going to tell you they are.

But a condition is not an inheritance. An inheritance is what is handed over on purpose. A condition is the weather you are both standing in.

Your son will remember the weather. He will also remember what his mother was like in it, and the second one is the thing that gets handed on, and it is the one you are choosing every single day without counting it.

You are handing on a manner of life and the conditions are not the thing being passed. Scripture says the righteous man walks in his integrity and his children are blessed after him (Proverbs 20:7), which puts it in the walking, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that carry, so a woman on a shift she cannot move is not disqualified from leaving anything.

And I will say the honest thing, because this site does not sell outcomes. Nothing here promises you what your son does at twenty-five, and nothing here promises the money changes. That is not mine to sell and I will not. What is settled is what the psalm attaches the blessing to, and you are already doing it, at half past eleven, while counting a list that leaves it out.
