In You All the Families

Twenty-two at the table at the last one, and he counted, and he was the only one.

Not the only good person. That is worth saying because he would say it first. There are people at that table who have looked after their parents for years, and one who took in a nephew, and an aunt who is the reason three of them got through their twenties.

He is simply the only one who prays. The only one for whom any of this is a live matter rather than a background fact from a childhood nobody in that family particularly enjoyed.

And he is not the loud sort. He has never made a scene about it. He says a short thing over his own food, quietly, and nobody minds, and two of them find it slightly funny in a way that does not bother him at all.

But there is an arithmetic that runs in him on the drive home, every single time, and it is a poor arithmetic and he has never once been able to argue with it.

One out of twenty-two.

Four generations of a family with nobody in it, and now one man, and that man is fifty-two and has no particular gifts and is not going to change anybody's mind about anything, and when he looks down that table what he sees is a number that is not going to move.

A promise made to one man about everybody

And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed (Genesis 12:3).

I want you to look at the arithmetic in that sentence, because it is the opposite of yours.

On one side: one man. Not a movement, not a nation, not a council. One elderly childless man from a family that, the chapter before makes clear, worshipped other things.

On the other side: all families of the earth.

And the preposition in the middle is the whole thing. In thee. Not: after enough people join you. Not: once there is a critical mass. In one man, all families.

That is God's arithmetic, and it is stated at the beginning, before anything has happened, when the visible evidence for it was one household leaving a city.

You are inside an arithmetic that starts with one and does not need a majority. That is how the word states the promise, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that a real answer to a man doing sums on a drive home, because Scripture says not by might nor by power but by My Spirit, which is a sentence about how small beginnings actually work.

Where your arithmetic came from

Let me name the sum you are doing, because it is a reasonable sum and it is the wrong tool.

One out of twenty-two is a proportion, and proportions are how you would assess an opinion in a room. They are the right instrument for a vote and they are the wrong instrument for a line, because a family is not a poll; it is a chain, and chains are affected by what is in one link.

You have been assessing a chain with a method designed for a vote, and getting a number that means nothing, and then feeling the number on the drive home.

You are a link and you have been counting yourself as a percentage. The word says the kingdom is like leaven which a woman hid in three measures of meal till the whole was leavened (Matthew 13:33), and leaven is never a majority of anything at any point in the process, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does that spreading, which is why it is never a matter of numbers in the room.

The quiet thing over your own food

Now let me tell you what your short prayer over your own plate is actually doing, because you think it is a private habit that two people find funny.

It is a form, said out loud, in a room, twenty-two times over, at gathering after gathering.

Children at that table have now seen a man do a thing they have never seen anybody else do. They have not been taught anything. Nobody has explained it. They have simply been in a room where God was addressed out loud by somebody they like, repeatedly, over years, in an ordinary voice.

That is how forms transmit. It is exactly how the not-praying transmitted through the previous four generations, and it works identically in the other direction.

You are already doing the thing that travels, and you have been calling it a private habit. Scripture says let your light so shine before men (Matthew 5:16), and shining is not arguing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a small repeated thing land on a child years later.

And I will keep it honest, because you would notice. Nothing here promises that anybody at that table comes in, and I have no word about your brother or your aunt. What is settled is that God's arithmetic in Genesis starts with one man and reaches all families, and that a man doing sums on a drive home is using the wrong instrument.
