She got saved at twenty-three and she has been waiting to lose it ever since.
Not in a dramatic way. She would fail a test on this: if you asked her the doctrine she would give you a solid answer, and it would be the right one, and she would even quote you a verse.
The waiting is not in her theology. It is in her body.
It is in the way she goes quiet after she has been short with somebody. It is in the fact that she keeps a mental ledger of the last three weeks and can tell you, roughly, where she is on it. It is in the small cold drop she gets when she has not read anything for four days, which is not conviction, because conviction moves a person toward God and this moves her away from Him and into a corridor of her own making.
She is thirty-eight now. Fifteen years of it. Fifteen years of a woman who genuinely loves Jesus living with one eye on the exit, waiting for the morning she wakes up and finds she has finally done it, gone too far, worn it out, dropped through.
And here is the thing she has never noticed, though she has read the verse a hundred times.
The verse is about a hand. And the hand in it is not hers.

Read whose hand it is
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: and I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand (John 10:27 to 29).
Now read it again and count the hands.
There are two, and both of them belong to God. The sheep in that passage do not have a hand in the picture at all. They are not described as holding on. They are described as being held, by a Son, inside the grip of a Father, and the security is doubled, deliberately, because the writer knew somebody would ask.
Nowhere in those three verses is a sheep told that its grip is the thing that matters.
You are being held by two hands and neither one of them is yours. That is the plain reading of the passage, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes that from a page into the body of a woman who goes cold when she has not read anything for four days, because Scripture calls Him the Spirit who bears witness that we are children of God (Romans 8:16).
The ledger
Let me name what you have built, because you have never described it out loud and it deserves to be seen.
You keep a ledger. It runs about three weeks back. It has your temper on it, and your prayer life, and how you were with your sister, and how often you have thought about God when nothing was wrong. And every morning some part of you runs the totals and tells you where you stand today.
Nobody gave you that ledger. You made it, out of a real love for God and a real fear of losing Him, and the two of those wound around each other so tightly that you cannot now tell them apart.
But look at what it does. It makes your standing with God a variable that you calculate. And a woman calculating her own standing daily is a woman who can never rest, because the calculation has to be redone tomorrow.
You have a standing that is not recalculated in the morning. The word says there is no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1), and no condemnation is a legal state and not a mood, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a legal state into rest in an actual chest.
What perishing means, and what it does not
Notice what Jesus says will not happen: they shall never perish.
He does not say they will never fail. He does not say a sheep will never wander; He tells a whole story about one that does, in another gospel, and the point of that story is what the shepherd does about it.
He says they will not perish, and He says the reason is not the sheep's performance but the strength of the one holding them, and He compares that strength to the Father, who is greater than all.
You have not been kept by your consistency for a single day of the fifteen years. Scripture says He is able to keep you from falling and to present you faultless (Jude 24), and it is the Holy Spirit who is called the seal on a believer, and a seal is applied by somebody else and is not maintained by the thing it is stamped on.
And here is the honest edge, because this site does not oversell. Nothing here says the ledger disappears tomorrow morning. Fifteen years of a habit does not lift because a paragraph was well argued. What is settled is whose hands are in the passage, and a woman who knows that stops checking her own grip, which is the only grip in the story that was ever in doubt.
So today the checking stops, and it stops with a picture, because you are a woman who thinks in pictures.
Close one hand. Now put it inside the other and close that one round it.
The hand inside is you. The hand round it is Christ. And the passage puts a third one round the outside, and it belongs to the Father, and He is greater than all.
Now open the inside hand. Go on. Open it, inside the other one, and notice that absolutely nothing happens, and that you are still exactly as held as you were four seconds ago.
You are held by a grip that does not depend on yours. The word says no one is able to pluck them out of My Father's hand, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that felt, and He has been doing it for fifteen years while you were watching your own fingers.
Declare this over yourself
Now speak, with your hands where they are. You are in Christ, and being in Him is not a position you maintain by good weeks; it is a gift given to you and held by Him. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is the one who lands it. What God does about the ledger and the habit and how long it takes to fade is His to decide and He may work in you slower than you would like. What He has said about whose hand you are in is not up for review.
- Ledger I have run while braced, you are not a scoreboard God reads. Scripture says there is no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, and no condemnation is a legal state and it does not get recalculated at six in the morning.
- Fear that one morning I will wake up dropped, you are answered and you are leaving. In the name of Jesus I stand on the word that says no one is able to pluck them out of My Father's hand, and no one has always included me on my worst week.
- Father, You are greater than all and I am inside Your hand and inside Your Son's. I thank You that by Your Spirit my grip was never the thing holding me, and I have just opened it and I am still here.
