Kept by Power, Not by Grip

He describes his faith with his hands and he does not know he is doing it.

Watch him talk about it. He makes a fist. Every time. Somebody asks how he is doing with God and he says, I am hanging on, and the hand comes up and closes.

He is forty-six. He has been a Christian since he was nineteen and he has not had what anybody would call a crisis. There is no addiction, no scandal, no long dark season he can point at. If you asked his wife she would say he is one of the most consistent men she has ever met.

And he is tired in a way that has nothing to do with sleep.

The tiredness is this: he believes, at a level far below argument, that his relationship with God is a rope, and that he is the one holding it, and that whatever happens to him is a function of how tight his fingers are on a given Tuesday. So he reads. He prays. He turns up. He does all of it, and every bit of it is good, and every bit of it is being done by a man who thinks the whole weight is hanging off his own knuckles.

Twenty-seven years of gripping.

And the strange thing is that nobody would ever have guessed, because a man who grips that hard looks, from the outside, exactly like a man who is doing well.

Read what you are kept by

Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time (1 Peter 1:5).

Four words at the center of it: kept by the power.

Not kept by your grip. Not kept by your consistency. Kept by the power of God, and the word Peter uses for kept is a military one; it means garrisoned, guarded by a force posted around a thing.

And then: through faith. Faith is in the verse, and it matters, and I am not going to pretend it is not there. But look at what faith is doing grammatically. It is the channel, not the engine. The power is God's. Faith is how the kept person receives the keeping, which is why the Bible can say a mustard seed of it is enough. A channel does not have to be strong. It has to be open.

You are kept by a power that is not yours and were never asked to supply the strength. That is the plain grammar of the verse, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes that off a page and puts it into a pair of hands that have been closed for twenty-seven years, because Scripture calls Him the one who strengthens the inner man rather than the one who inspects it.

Where the grip came from

Let me say something honest about the origin of this, because you did not choose it and nobody taught it to you on purpose.

You are a responsible man. You were probably a responsible boy. Somewhere early, you worked out that things hold together when you hold them, and life mostly rewarded that, and then you got saved at nineteen and applied the only operating system you had to the one relationship in the universe where it does not apply.

That is not sin. It is competence, misdirected, and it has kept you turning up for nearly three decades while quietly exhausting you.

You have been doing a job in this relationship that was never advertised. The word says it is God who works in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure (Philippians 2:13), which puts the working inside rather than the effort outside, and the Holy Spirit is the one described as producing fruit rather than demanding it.

A rope and a rescue are different pictures

Here is the picture problem, and it is the whole article.

You picture a rope. You are on one end, God is on the other, and the tension between you is what keeps you off the rocks.

Scripture's picture is a rescue. Somebody in the water, somebody who has come in after them, and an arm around the chest. In a rescue the person being rescued is asked to stop fighting, not to hold tighter, and every lifeguard in the world will tell you that a man gripping is the hardest man to save.

You are held around the chest by One who came in after you. The word says He is able to keep you from falling (Jude 24), and able is His word about His own strength rather than a comment on yours, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that a real releasing in a body rather than a better idea in a head.

And here is the limit, honestly stated. Letting go of the rope does not mean you stop reading or praying or turning up. You will do all of it tomorrow and you should. What changes is what those things are: not the rope that holds you, but the ordinary company you keep with a God who is holding you anyway.
