Carrying His NameGalatians 4:7

No Longer a Servant

This message is for the woman who works for God like staff and has never once walked into the room as family

She arrives early and she leaves last and she has done it for seventeen years.

Chairs. Coffee. The rota nobody else wants to hold. The awkward phone calls. The person at the door who needs somebody to talk to for forty minutes on a Sunday when everybody else has gone to lunch.

She loves it and she is not being taken advantage of and if you suggested she was she would be irritated with you.

But there is a shape to how she moves in that building that somebody watching would notice and she never has.

She comes in through the side. Always. Not because she is not welcome at the front; the front is where the people are and she is going straight to the kitchen and the side is nearer.

She stands, in meetings, even when there are chairs. She hovers. She eats last, standing up, usually while doing something else. She refers to the church, in conversation, as they.

And when she prays, and she prays a great deal and well, there is a shape to that too, and it is the shape of a good employee reporting in: what has been done, what needs doing, what she is asking for on behalf of somebody else. Faithful. Diligent. Detailed.

And never, in seventeen years, has she come in through the front, sat in the best chair, and said nothing about work.

No Longer a Servant

The verse that ends the employment

Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ (Galatians 4:7).

Paul has spent most of a chapter on this and it lands in one sentence, and the sentence has a before and an after in it.

No more a servant. That is the ending of a status. Not a demotion of service, because he serves harder after this than before, but the ending of servant as the category a person occupies.

But a son. That is the new category, and in the world he is writing into it is a legal word, not a sentimental one. A servant is in the household on terms. A son is in it by birth and inheritance, and the two are not different levels of the same thing; they are different kinds of belonging.

And then: and if a son, then an heir. Which is the part that finishes the argument, because staff are paid and family inherit, and those are not the same transaction.

You are family in that house and not staff. That is what the verse says has happened, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a legal status into a felt one, because Scripture says God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying Abba, Father (Galatians 4:6), which is the verse immediately before this one and is the mechanism for it.

Seventeen years of side doors

Now let me say the thing plainly, because it is not a rebuke and it might sound like one.

Nothing you have done is wrong. The chairs are real. The rota is real. The forty minutes on a Sunday with somebody at the door is some of the best work anybody in that building does and most of them have no idea it happens.

But a body tells the truth about what it believes, and yours has been telling it for seventeen years through side doors and standing up and eating last and saying they.

You did not decide any of that. It assembled itself, the way these things do, out of a genuine humility plus a real conviction that the front of the room belongs to other people.

You are not on the payroll and you never were. The word says you have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear, but the Spirit of adoption (Romans 8:15), and bondage there is the servant category being explicitly ruled out, and the Holy Spirit is named in that verse as the one who does the work of making a person know it.

What family does that staff cannot

Here is the practical difference and it is the one that will matter tomorrow.

Staff report. Family talk. Staff bring items. Family sit down. Staff have a function in a house and their welcome runs along it, and the moment the function stops they have a reason to wonder whether they should be there.

Which is exactly why you have never once been able to imagine going to that building on a day when there was nothing to do.

Family can walk in with nothing, sit down, say nothing useful, and be exactly as much in the house as on their busiest day.

You are as welcome empty-handed as you are with the rota in your hand. Scripture says if a son, then an heir of God through Christ, and an heir's standing does not move with their usefulness, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that believable to a woman who has arrived early for seventeen years.

And I will be honest, because you would spot a soft ending. Reading this does not mean you stop doing the chairs, and I hope you do not, because somebody has to and you are good at it. What is settled is which door you are entitled to come in by, and a woman who knows she is family carries the same rota in a completely different way.

The breakthrough

So today you sit down in the best chair in the room, and you read the verse there.

Not the edge of a chair. Not the arm of one. The best chair in whatever room you are in, the one you would offer to somebody else, and you are going to sit right back in it, which is a thing your body has not done in a room like that for seventeen years.

And then you are going to read the verse out loud and say nothing about work. No rota, no report, no requests on anybody else's behalf.

Sit down and say nothing useful. That is the whole assignment, and it is going to be harder than any Sunday you have ever worked.

You are no longer a servant but a daughter, and an heir of God through Christ. The word says the category has changed and gives the inheritance as the proof, and it is the Holy Spirit who cries Abba from inside a person, which is a family word and not a staff one.

Declare this over yourself

Now speak, sitting back in the chair. You are in Christ, and in Him you are a daughter and an heir; that standing was given to you and does not run along your usefulness. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is the one who lands it. What God does about that building and the years of work is His to decide and He may answer in ways you do not see. What He has said about the category you are in is written as a change that has already happened.

  1. Side door I have come in by for years, you are nearer the kitchen and you are not my entrance. Scripture says thou art no more a servant but a son, and that verse ends a status rather than adjusting one.
  2. Instinct to stand when there are chairs, you are put down at this table today. In the name of Jesus I sit right back, because the word says I have not received the spirit of bondage but the Spirit of adoption, and adoption is a family word.
  3. Father, I am no longer a servant but a daughter, and an heir of God through Christ, and I am sitting in the best chair with nothing to report. I thank You that by Your Spirit I am as welcome empty-handed as I am with the rota in my hand.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
