The Name Written On

She introduces herself with a verb.

I run a small team. I do the accounts for two charities. I look after my mother three days a week now. Every introduction she gives is an activity, and she has noticed it, and she has noticed why.

The verbs are the only things she can say with confidence.

Because in six years she has moved twice, changed churches once, lost a friendship she thought was structural, and had a body that has done two things she did not authorize. The house is rented. The job is a contract that gets renewed in March or does not. Her mother's situation changes every eight weeks and every change has a form attached to it.

She is not unhappy. She is competent and warm and there are people in that hall who would say she is the most reliable person they know.

But if you asked her what about her life is permanent, she would go quiet for longer than the question warrants, and then she would probably answer with another verb.

And underneath that, in the part she does not go to often, there is a low steady sense that she is a set of arrangements rather than a person: that she is held together by what she is currently doing, and that if the doing stopped, there would be a surprisingly small amount left standing.

A pillar and a name written on it

Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God (Revelation 3:12).

Three images in that verse and every one of them is about permanence.

A pillar, which is the part of a building that does not get moved. Structural. Load-bearing. Nobody rearranges a pillar for a season.

He shall go no more out, which is a promise of an end to being relocated.

And I will write upon him the name of my God, which is the part I want you to hold. Written on. Not attached. Not printed on a card that can be reissued. Written on the pillar itself, so that removing the name would mean destroying the stone.

You have a name written on you rather than handed to you. That is the image the word chooses, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes an image like that into something a woman can stand on, because Scripture calls Him the earnest, a deposit that guarantees what is coming.

Verbs are not a character flaw

Let me be careful here, because you are a woman who does a great deal and I am not about to tell you that doing things is shallow.

Your verbs are real. The team is genuinely run. The accounts are genuinely done. Your mother is genuinely looked after, three days a week, which is not a small sentence.

And you lead with them for a completely sound reason: they are the only things about your life that have held still long enough to be described. When the house is rented and the contract is annual and the body has surprised you twice, the activities are the most solid available material.

That is not vanity. It is a person building a self-description out of the sturdiest thing to hand.

You are not held together by what you are currently doing. The word says our life is hid with Christ in God (Colossians 3:3), which is a location and not an activity, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a hidden thing feel like ground under a woman whose visible arrangements keep changing.

Written on, not printed on

Here is the difference, and it is the whole article.

A printed name can be reissued. That is the world you live in: a lanyard, a contract, an entry in a system, a tenancy. All of those have your name on them and all of them are, by design, revisable. There is somebody whose job it is to update them, and they will.

A written-on name, in the sense the verse means, is inscribed into the substance of the thing. It is not information about the pillar. It is part of the pillar.

Which means that what God has put on you is not sitting in a file that somebody maintains. It is on you, and it has been since He put it there, and there is no process by which it gets amended in March.

You are marked with a name that cannot be reissued. Scripture says the foundation of God stands sure, having this seal, the Lord knows them that are His (2 Timothy 2:19), and it is the Holy Spirit who is described as the one who seals a believer, which is a permanence word and not a comfort word.

And I will be honest, because you would not thank me for anything else. Nothing here says the contract renews or that your mother's situation stops changing every eight weeks. The arrangements will keep moving; that is what arrangements do. What is settled is that you are not the arrangements, and a woman who knows what is written on her can watch the forms change without watching herself change with them.
