Called by the Name of the Lord

He has three cards in his wallet and none of them mean what a card is supposed to mean.

Workforce card. Union card. And the one for the team he has played for since he was nineteen, which is the closest of the three and is still, if he is honest with himself at the end of a season, a group of men he likes very much and does not belong to.

Membership is not belonging. He worked that out slowly, over about a decade, and he has never had a word for it until recently.

A membership is a set of terms. You are in while you meet them. You pay the dues, you turn up, you fulfill the criteria, and the moment you do not, the card stops working, and nobody has done anything wrong when it does. That is what a membership is for.

He is forty-three. He is in more things than most people. He would be on any list you like of men who are involved.

And in the truck, in the mornings, in the ten minutes before the shift where a man is alone with his own head, there is a quiet unowned feeling that he cannot put anywhere.

Not lonely. Not excluded. Un-owned. As though he is a person who is welcome in a large number of places and belongs to none of them.

A people with a name on them that could be seen

And all people of the earth shall see that thou art called by the name of the LORD; and they shall be afraid of thee (Deuteronomy 28:10).

Two things worth noticing.

First: called by the name of the LORD. The construction there is possessive. It is the language you would use about a household, or a child, or something with an owner. It does not describe a membership; it describes belonging to somebody.

Second: all the people of the earth shall see. Whatever this is, it was visible. It was not a private interior state that a person had to talk themselves into on a Monday morning. Something about a people who had God's name on them showed.

You have God's name on you and it is an ownership and not a membership. That is the construction the word uses, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes an ownership like that felt in a man alone in a truck, because Scripture says the Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are children, and children are the one relationship with no terms attached.

Terms, and the thing that has no terms

Let me lay it out plainly, because you are a man who deals in plain things.

Every card in your wallet works on terms. Meet them, and you are in. Stop meeting them, and you are out, and nobody has wronged you. That is not cynicism; that is what those organizations are and they are good and necessary.

You have therefore spent twenty-four years of adult life inside relationships that are all, without exception, conditional, and it has quietly taught your body that being in something is always a matter of continuing to qualify.

And so you have never once experienced being simply owned by somebody, and the ten minutes in the truck is where that shows.

You are owned and not enrolled, and there are no terms on it. The word says you are not your own, for you are bought with a price (1 Corinthians 6:19 and 20), and bought is the most unconditional word in the entire vocabulary of belonging, and the Holy Spirit is called the seal set on what was bought, which is a mark of whose something is.

What it looks like from outside

The verse says the nations would see it, and I want to be careful here, because this is where people go wrong.

It does not say they would see a religious performance. It does not say the people would be identifiable by their clothing or their vocabulary.

What it says is that the name would be visible on them, and everything in that chapter suggests what was visible was the effect of being under it: a people not scrambling, not scrapping for position, not living as though everything depended on continuing to qualify.

That is what un-owned looks like from outside, and it is also what owned looks like, and they are very different sights.

You are able to work a shift as a man who belongs to somebody. Scripture says he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit (1 Corinthians 6:17), which is about as owned as language gets, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that visible in a body rather than merely believed in a head.

And I will keep it straight. Nothing here says the workforce card becomes warmer or the team starts feeling like a family, and neither of those is what a card is for. What is settled is that there is a name on you that is not a membership, and a man who knows that carries the ten minutes in the truck differently.
