Blessed Are YouPsalm 34:1

At All Times, Including This One

This message is for the young mother whose prayers have become a rolling list of what is not working, who wants a way to open her mouth to God that does not start with a problem

She has a good prayer life, technically. That is the strange part.

She prays every day. She prays in the car and over the washing up and in the four minutes between putting him down and hearing him get up again. She has never gone through one of those seasons people talk about where they stop.

But she noticed something in February, and she has not been able to un-notice it since.

Every single one of them starts the same way.

Lord, the sleep. Lord, the money. Lord, the thing with her sister. Lord, this rash. Lord, I am so tired. Lord, the car. Lord, please can Thursday be easier than Wednesday was.

Not one of them is unreasonable. Every item on that list is a real item. She is not complaining about nothing; she is a woman with a small child and a tight month and a body that has not been fully rested since 2024, and the things she brings to God are the actual contents of her life.

It is just that she has become aware, in the way you become aware of a hum you have been living with, that she has no other way in. That if she took away the problems she would not know what to say. That God, for her, has quietly become the department you contact when something is broken.

And she thought, standing at the sink one Tuesday: I would not want to be talked to like this.

Then she felt terrible about thinking it. And then she added it to the list.

At All Times, Including This One

Nobody is taking your list away

Let me say this before anything else, because if I do not say it first you will read the rest of this article braced.

Your list is welcome. Every item. God is not tired of it and He has never once found it tedious, and the idea that He would prefer a nicer class of prayer is not in the book anywhere. Jesus told a whole parable about a woman who kept coming back with the same request until she got an answer, and He told it approvingly (Luke 18:1 to 8).

So nothing in this article is going to ask you to stop bringing what is broken.

You have been heard every single time, including the four-minute ones and the ones said into a sink. The word says He hears the cry of the needy and does not despise their prayer (Psalm 102:17), and it is the Holy Spirit who carries a half-finished sentence from a tired woman up to God as a whole one, which Scripture says is exactly what He does when we do not know how to pray as we ought (Romans 8:26).

What David actually did first

Now let me show you a man who had a longer list than yours and a genuinely alarming life, and what he put in front of it.

I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth (Psalm 34:1).

Read the second half. His praise shall continually be in my mouth. That is a man making a decision about what his mouth is going to be full of, and he is making it in the middle of a psalm whose heading records that he wrote it while pretending to be insane in order to escape being killed.

That is not a man with nothing to report. That is a man who has decided the report goes second.

You have a first sentence available to you that is not about what is broken. Scripture models it in the mouth of a man in serious danger, and it is the Holy Spirit who puts that kind of sentence in a person's mouth before the circumstances have earned it, because He is described as the one who bears witness with our spirit about what is true rather than about what is convenient.

What changes when the order changes

Here is what I want you to see, and it is not a technique and it is not a mood improvement plan.

When your first sentence is about what is missing, the shape of the conversation is set before it starts. You are a person with a deficit talking to a source of supply. That is a real relationship and it is not a wrong one, and it is also, if it is the only one, a thin one.

When the first sentence names something God has done, something else happens, and it happens to you rather than to Him. You are reminded, in your own voice, in your own kitchen, who you are talking to before you tell Him what is wrong. And a woman who remembers who she is talking to says the same list differently.

You are not asking a stranger for help; you are talking to a Father who has already done a great deal for you. The word says He is the God who daily loads us with benefits (Psalm 68:19), and daily is a specific word, and it is the Holy Spirit who is called the Spirit of adoption because He is the one who makes a person's prayers sound like family rather than like an application (Romans 8:15).

And then the list

Notice what the psalm does next, because this is the part that keeps it honest.

David blesses God at the top, and then goes on, in the same psalm, to talk about his fears, his poverty, his troubles, and being delivered out of all of them. Verse four: I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. Verse six: this poor man cried.

He does not swap his need for gratitude. He puts them in an order.

You are allowed to say both, and you always were. The written word puts the blessing first and the crying second in the very same song, and it is the Holy Spirit who holds a person steady enough to do it in that order on a morning when the sleep was bad.

And this site will not oversell you. Starting with a blessing does not make Thursday easier than Wednesday. Nothing here promises that the rash clears or the month stretches. What is settled is that you have a way in that is not a fault report, and a woman with two ways in prays differently from a woman with one.

The breakthrough

So here is the whole thing, and it will take you about nine seconds.

Before the next item goes to God, say one sentence out loud that names something He has done and asks for nothing.

Not a big one. Do not go looking for a spiritual sunset. Something small and real and from this week: the fact that the boy slept from one until five, or that the woman in front of you at the checkout paid the eighty pence, or that you got through Tuesday, or that He is good, which is true on days when nothing else is.

Then say the list. All of it. Do not shorten it to be polite.

You have been given the first sentence and the second, and neither one has to be earned. The word says His praise shall continually be in my mouth, and the same psalm says this poor man cried, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes both of those honest in the same breath in the same kitchen.

Declare this over yourself

Now speak. You are in Christ, and the word calls His Spirit the Spirit of adoption, which means the standing you have to speak to God like family was given to you and is not something you work up to on a good morning. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is the one who lands it. What God does about Thursday and the money and your sister is His to decide, and He may answer in a way you did not put on the list. What He has said about who you are to Him is settled.

  1. List I have opened every prayer with since February, you are welcome here and you are not first any more. Scripture says I will bless the LORD at all times and His praise shall continually be in my mouth, and today the order changes and nothing gets left out.
  2. Suspicion that God is the department I contact when something is broken, you are evicted from this kitchen. In the name of Jesus I speak to my Father and not to a helpline, because the word calls His Spirit the Spirit of adoption, and adoption is a family word.
  3. Father, You daily load me with benefits and I am naming one out loud before I name anything else. I thank You that by Your Spirit I have two ways in and not one, and my list is still coming, and it is coming second.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
