Through the Gates First

She prays the way some people arrive at a family argument. Already going.

She does not sit down first. There is no settling. She starts talking to God in the middle of a sentence she began in her own head about forty minutes earlier, usually in the car, usually about the same three things, and the first words He gets are the tail end of a case she has been building since Tuesday.

Lord, and another thing.

She is not irreverent. She would be horrified at the suggestion. She loves God with a fierceness that has carried her through two decades of things that would have taken other people out, and she has never once considered walking away from Him.

But she has noticed that she arrives hot. Every time. That her prayers have the emotional texture of a woman climbing a wall rather than a woman walking through a door, and that she is always slightly out of breath in them, and that she finishes them more tired than she started.

And she has never once wondered whether there is a way in.

Because nobody ever told her there was one. Nobody sat her down and said: there is a gate, and here is where it is, and here is what you say as you come through it. She learned to pray by watching people who were also climbing, and she got very good at climbing, and it never occurred to her that the wall was optional.

There is a gate, and you were told where it is

One of the shortest psalms in the book contains the plainest instruction about how to come in, and most of us have sung it at a hundred services without ever hearing it as directions.

Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name (Psalm 100:4).

That is not a description of a mood. It is a route. Gates, then courts. Thanksgiving at the gate, praise in the court, and then you are in.

And notice what is not in that verse. There is no condition. It does not say enter with thanksgiving if you have had a good week. It does not say come in with praise once the situation improves. The gate is the way in on the days you feel like it and on the days you have been building a case since Tuesday.

You have a way in that does not require you to be calm first. That is the plain reading of the text, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a spoken thanksgiving into an actual entry rather than a form of words, because Scripture says it is by one Spirit that we have access to the Father (Ephesians 2:18).

Climbing works, and it costs you something the gate does not

Now I am going to say the thing about the wall, and I want you to hear it as somebody who has climbed plenty of walls in her time.

Climbing works. That is the trap. You do get in. God does not turn away a woman who comes over the top, and He never has, and there are two decades of answered prayer in your life to prove it.

The cost is not that He is offended. The cost is that you arrive exhausted and you arrive at speed, and a woman who arrives at speed cannot hear anything for the first few minutes, and by the time she can she has usually run out of time.

The gate is not a rule about manners. It is a way of arriving that leaves you able to hear.

You are welcome in either way, and there is a way in that does not leave you out of breath. The word says enter with thanksgiving, an instruction and not a filter, and it is the Holy Spirit who is called the one who helps our weakness in prayer (Romans 8:26), which means the arriving has never once been something you had to manage on your own.

What thanksgiving actually is at a gate

Let me be concrete, because vagueness here turns into a chore.

Thanksgiving at the gate is not a list of things you are grateful for. It is not an inventory and it is not a gratitude practice. It is one sentence, out loud, naming something God has actually done, said at the threshold of a prayer before the situation is mentioned.

That is all it is. Eight seconds. And what it does is not for Him; He knows what He has done. It is for the woman saying it, because a mouth that has just named a real thing God did is attached to a person who is now, for a moment, remembering who she is talking to.

You are not walking into an empty room to argue with the air; you are walking into a court that belongs to a King who has already acted. The word says be thankful unto Him and bless His name, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes that a real entry into a real presence and not a warm-up exercise.

And I will be honest with you, because you have no patience for anything that is not. Coming in through the gate does not resolve the three things. Nothing here says the situation moves this week. What is settled is that you have a door, that you were told where it is, and that a woman who walks in has breath left to listen with.
