The Words My Grandfather Said

The old man did it standing, which is the detail everybody in that family remembers.

Sunday, one o'clock, twenty-two people in a room built for twelve, and at some point the noise would drop about halfway, not because anyone asked, and the grandfather would push his chair back and stand, and put one hand flat on the bread. Not on the table. On the bread.

And he would say the same thing every week. It took eleven seconds. His grandson timed it once, at the age of nine, out of boredom, and was ashamed of himself afterwards for about thirty years.

The grandson is fifty-four now. He has his own table. It seats eight and it is usually four. He is a good man, a present father, the kind who fixes the tap himself and turns up to things. And in twenty-nine years of that table he has never once said anything over it.

He has thought about it. He has come close. Once, at Christmas, with everybody sat down, he actually got as far as putting his hand on the bread, and then he made a joke instead and passed the butter.

Because here is what he believes, though he has never put it in a sentence: those words were his grandfather's. They came with the voice, and the accent, and the enormous hands, and the seventy-one years of standing up in front of people who loved him. The grandson has none of that. He has a table and four people and a hand that would shake.

So the bread goes round unblessed, and has done since 1997.

The words were never his

I want to take one thing away from you today, and it is a beautiful thing, and I am taking it away because it is not true.

You believe your grandfather had something. A gift, a weight, a presence, some quality of person that made a blessing sound like a blessing when he said it. And because you do not have that quality, you have concluded that in your mouth the same words would be an imitation, and an imitation at a table is worse than a silence.

Here is what Scripture actually does with these words. God gives them away. He hands them to Moses, who hands them to Aaron, who hands them to his sons, and the psalms take the same shape and put it in the mouth of anybody singing: God be merciful unto us, and bless us, and cause his face to shine upon us (Psalm 67:1). Us. The congregation. The people at the back. The ones with shaking hands.

You have been given these words, and they were never anybody's personal property. That is the plain reading of the text and not a generous one, and it is the Holy Spirit and not the speaker's presence who carries a blessing from a mouth to a head, which is exactly why your grandfather's eleven seconds landed on you and are still landing on you forty-five years later.

What you actually inherited was a habit, not a talent

There is a difference between inheriting a gift and inheriting a practice, and families confuse the two constantly.

Your grandfather was not born able to do that. Somebody did it over him. He copied it badly at first, at a table of his own, probably with a hand that shook, in a year nobody in your family can name any more. What came down to you was not his ability. It was the shape of a thing a man does at a table, and a shape can be picked up by anybody who is willing to look foolish for eleven seconds.

You are not an imitation of that man. You are the next one to stand up. The word says the promise is to you and to your children and to all that are afar off (Acts 2:39), which is a sentence about a thing traveling down a line rather than a thing owned at the top of it, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes the words live at your table exactly as He made them live at his.

Blessing God and being blessed are one motion

Now the part that matters for a table, and it is the reason God chose bread.

In the Hebrew habit, a berakhah, a blessing, is spoken toward God first. Blessed are You. You do not bless the food; you bless the One who gave it, out loud, in front of everybody, and the room turns for a moment and looks in a different direction. And what happens to the people in that room while it happens is that they are put underneath something.

That is why your grandfather stood. He was not performing. He was turning the direction of the room.

You have the standing to turn the direction of your own table, and it does not depend on how you sound. Scripture puts a blessing in the mouth of every believer and calls us a royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:9), which is standing and not sentiment, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the work while a man's voice is doing something quite ordinary.

And I will be straight with you, because we do not oversell here. Saying it will not repair everything at that table. It will not bring back the twenty-two people or the room built for twelve. What is guaranteed is not the atmosphere of your Sundays. What is guaranteed is that the God who said I will bless them meant it, and that a table with a blessing spoken over it is a different table from one without, whether or not anybody at it says a word about the change.
