It happens at about six in the evening, and it happens on Sundays, and it has been happening for eleven years.
She will be doing something entirely ordinary. Draining potatoes. Folding a jumper. Standing at a window with a cup of tea watching the light go off the fields. And a sentence arrives in her head, uninvited and complete, in a voice that is nobody's in particular.
The LORD bless you and keep you.
She does not go looking for it. She has not been inside a church since a Wednesday in the spring of eleven years ago, and she did not leave in a dramatic way, which is part of why it has been so hard to explain to anybody. There was no scandal. There was a slow accumulation of things: a person who was unkind and never called on it, a season where she was very tired and nobody noticed, a Sunday where she realized she was performing, and then a Wednesday where she simply did not go, and then a great many Wednesdays.
And she is fine. She would tell you she is fine and she would largely mean it.
But at six on a Sunday, over the potatoes, the words come, and what she feels is not nostalgia. It is something much more specific and much harder to say out loud.
She feels like a woman standing outside a house she used to live in, hearing something being said inside, that she is fairly sure was addressed to whoever lives there now.

The blessing was never the property of the building
Let me start with the thing that will take the longest to believe, so it has time to work.
Those words did not come from a building. They were not issued by a membership. God gave them to Moses, Moses gave them to Aaron, and God attached to them a sentence that settles the whole question of ownership: so shall they put my name upon them, and I will bless them.
The priest supplies the mouth. God supplies the blessing. That means the blessing has only ever had one source, and you did not walk out on the source. You walked out of a room.
You are still inside the thing you think you left. The word says the LORD blesses the righteous and compasses him with favor as with a shield (Psalm 5:12), and the righteousness in that verse belongs to God and is given rather than achieved, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been carrying that sentence to a woman at a window for eleven years, which is the only sane explanation for why you keep hearing it.
Somebody has been saying it
Here is what I want you to sit with, because it is the strangest and kindest fact in this whole article.
You have not been able to stop hearing it.
Eleven years is a long time for a phrase to survive with no reinforcement. You have had no services, no congregation, no reminders, and a fairly settled decision not to go back. Habits die in far less than eleven years. That sentence should have gone the way of the hymn numbers and the smell of the hall.
It has not gone. It arrives, unbidden, on the specific evening it used to be said, at roughly the hour it used to be said.
You have been followed, and it has been gentle the whole time. Scripture says goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life (Psalm 23:6), and the word follow there is a pursuing word, and it is the Holy Spirit who does that pursuing, which means the voice over the potatoes has never once been a memory misfiring.
Nothing was revoked
Now let me deal with the belief underneath the ache, because you have never stated it and it has been running your Sunday evenings.
The belief is: I forfeited it. Not through anything dramatic. Through absence. Through the accumulated weight of eleven years of not being there, which surely amounts to something in the ledger.
But look at what a blessing is in Scripture. It is not a standing order and it is not a reward for attendance. It is God naming what He has done and what He is doing, over a person, out loud. It is His declaration, not your standing order, and He does not consult a register before He says it.
You have not been struck off anything, because nobody was keeping the kind of list you imagine. The word says the gifts and calling of God are without repentance (Romans 11:29), which means He does not change His mind about what He has given, and the Spirit of God who has been saying that sentence over you at dusk did not need you to be in a building to reach you.
And I will be honest with you, because the version of this that oversells has done real damage to people like you. I am not telling you what to do about a church. I am not going to hand you a next step you did not ask for, and I am not going to make the blessing conditional on you walking back through a door. What is settled today is only this: the words are yours, they were never the building's, and you are allowed to stand under them tonight, outside, over the potatoes, with nobody watching.
So tonight, when it comes, you are not going to let it pass over you like weather.
You are going to go outside. Actually outside, on a step or a path or a bit of grass, because a woman who has spent eleven years feeling like she is standing outside a house should receive this in the open air, where there is no door involved at all.
And you are going to say it back. Out loud. Not as a negotiation and not as a return to anything. As a woman receiving a sentence that has been following her patiently for over a decade.
You have every right to stand under this, and the right does not depend on a room. God said I will bless them, and He said the blessing was His to do rather than the building's to grant, and it is the Holy Spirit who lands it, so the words are exactly as strong on a hillside at dusk as they ever were under a roof.
Declare this over yourself
Now speak, out in the open. You are in Christ, and being in Him is what makes the righteousness in that psalm yours; it was given to you and it is not on loan from a congregation. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is the one who lands it. What God does about the eleven years and about whatever comes next is His to decide and He may answer in His own way. What He says over your head is not waiting on a building.
- Sentence that keeps arriving over the potatoes at six on a Sunday, you are not a memory and you are not a mistake. Scripture says He surrounds the righteous with favor as with a shield, and a shield goes where the person goes, which is why you have found me out here for eleven years.
- Verdict that I forfeited it by absence, you have run my Sunday evenings for long enough. In the name of Jesus I stand under what was said, because the word says the gifts and calling of God are without repentance, and He has not changed His mind about me while I was out.
- Father, You have been saying it over me at dusk for eleven years and I have finally stopped pretending it was the weather. I thank You that by Your Spirit I am blessed and I am kept tonight, standing in the open with no door in the way.
